The Weinstein Co. is on a Cannes buying spree. Having acquired distribution rights toThe Artist and Wu Xia, they have now picked up US rights from Pathe International to market title The Iron Lady, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and starring Meryl Streep (star of Lloyd’s Momma Mia!) and Jim Broadbent as UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher and her husband, Denis.Thatcher broke gender and class barriers to rise to power as Britain’s Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. The distrib is hosting several celebratory Croisette parties Friday.
The company plans to release the film, a portrait of Thatcher, the nature of power, and the price paid for it written by Abi Morgan and produced by Damian Jones, later this year. Harvey Weinstein will likely push a 2011 Academy campaign for Streep via the fall film festival circuit.
In a sign that the Weinsteins are not throwing their cash around too wildly, TWC partnered with The Yucaipa Company’s Ron Burkle, who also backed deals on Sundance pick-up Our Idiot Brother and The Details. The Iron Lady is a co-production of Pathé, Film4, UK Film Council presentation with the participation of Canal+ and Cine Cinema in association with Goldcrest Film Production LLP of a DJ Films Production.
